In August of 1941 almost the entire Jewish community of the Polish town of Tykocin was murdered by the invading Germans. In recent years the town has attracted approximately 100,000 visitors a year. It has become a major tourist attraction.

The prime objective of this book is to relate the ways in which the Jews and the Jewish past of Tykocin are publicly memorialized and variously understood today by visiting Jewish and Polish stakeholders. I examine present day renditions of the Jewish past as experienced and publicly shared in this singular town in such a way as to resonate with and contribute to our understanding of the Polish-Jewish experience in the past and present.
